Vineyard House, Kangaroo Ground
This house overlooks the Vineyard that was already established on the property. There are commanding views north towards Kinglake National Park and north east to east across Sugarloaf Dam towards the Yarra Valley.
The form of the roof that was chosen helps to generate the layout of the house. All the main living areas and bedrooms face north and take in the major views. There was a desire to be able to look up and out. A butterfly roof was selected with the 2 main roof slopes meeting in a large central box gutter. There are no eaves gutters to keep clean and the box gutter is safely accessible. The service areas, cinema room and the garage are on the south side of the house.
The house is accessible from the south side driveway that runs along the contour of the hill. There is easy ramp access to the front door.
Stone was selected (from a Melbourne quarry) for the southern section of the house for both its appearance and sense of anchoring the house into the hill.
The north side of the house has a lighter feel with “Coten” steel cladding surrounding the significant expanse of double glazing. Connecting the majority of the north of the house is a cantilevered timber deck with a roofed alfresco area above one section of the deck. There are glazed sliding doors from the lining area that disappear into a wall cavity to enhance the continuity between living area timber floors and wide board timbers on the deck.
